In recent years lots of emphasis is given to the online advertising and it seems right too. There are some of the business that are solely running online (e.g. Amazon, ebay, Google to name a few). It is a complete change from the past when the worth of a company was majored in terms of the physical asset or the cash or investment etc. but it is a nightmare for even the best accountants to find the real worth of these online businesses. During the dotcom boom most of the value was just based on the hype and the prospect for the future and expected internet growth and use of credit cards that did not happen that fast as was expected by the entrepreneurs of that time. This time it is not that bad and economist, accountants see the cash flow of these companies to evaluate the value though it cannot be true value but it is as close to realistic as it can be.
One of the major change of this century is perhaps Google. Google has changed the world in many ways and planning to change it many more ways. I will not go into the technological changes Google has made to the way we work and use computers today. I want to talk about how Google has changed the advertising. Before Google adsense came and even today there are many other ways of advertising. From news paper ads to bill board to posters on the railway stations to pamphlets in our door every day. But content-based search provided by the Google is working like wonder for the marketing people. Many of traditional managers see it is as a competitor for their jobs but it is supporting them in a way. Now advertisers can see clearly how much results the advertising bring to them by bidding appropriately for the adsense ads.
Many of the market research companies have come up with some figures that suggest that online advertising spending is not as much as the people spending time online. Though I don’t completely agree with them because marketing research is many a times far from reality but I agree on one fact that online advertising has made a significant impact on the way business is done. It is a great source of revenue for the publishers with good content. Some of the advertisers are not understanding it correctly and overbidding or placing their ads at too many websites that may hurt the industry - this is my concern with the online advertising. Some of the websites those are getting good number of online hits are getting greedy and placing too many ads in every possible format that is not good. These website can increase their rate for placing ads on their websites but websites should not lose the primary purpose of their existence. websites should remember their core business to provide information or sell something but not the ads.
